The long cold nights are drawing in, bonfire night is on the way and you’re getting ready for cosy evenings in your winter garden. Fire pits are an outdoor feature that can accentuate your space and create an ambience. Whether used as a gathering spot to entertain guests, toast marshmallows with the kids, or just to relax in the warmth, fire pit safety is essential, especially with artificial grass. Whatever the occasion our guide will help you set up a suitable space, keep your artificial lawn free from damage, and ensure your safety so you can enjoy your fire pit.

How to build a fire pit surrounded by artificial grass

Fire pits come in all shapes and sizes, depending on your garden design. Whether you are creating an above ground pit, or an in-ground fire pit, we’ve provided some advice to protect your artificial grass.

  • Ideally, set your fire pit up a minimum of 3 metres away from your artificial turf on a stable level surface using a fireproof platform such as concrete or a patio
  • Laying stones or brick around the pit will enclose the fire and reduce the risk of it spreading outside the pit
  • Remove any obstructions and flammable material where the fire pit will be placed
  • Position in the open away from shrubbery, overhanging branches, and rain covers
  • Ensure it is deep and wide enough to contain embers

How to light a fire
pit

To light a fire pit, you’ll need some small sticks,
twigs and wood that will start your fire burning, some kindling to keep it
going and a pack of matches to start the fire.

  • Check the wind direction when lighting, removing
obstacles in the line of wind
  • Do not light if it is too windy
  • Do not use paper and soft woods like cedar and pine
    as these can easily spark
  • Take extra precaution with lighter fluids and
limit the use of fuel on the fire.

How to use a fire pit

  • Never leave unattended
  • Do not wear loose or flammable clothing near the
    fire pit
  • Have a hosepipe or water container to hand in
    case of an emergency
  • Extinguish the fire with water
  • Leave ashes to cool down fully before discarding
