Compared to natural grass, artificial grass is very low maintenance in your garden however, that does not mean it doesn’t need any upkeep – especially if debris collects easily on your grass.
To ensure your artificial grass is long-lasting, stays looking good and clean, a little maintenance is required. We have put together a guide on everything you need to know about artificial grass maintenance to keep your garden looking good year round.
Every week we recommend checking your artificial grass for any dirt and small debris, such as leaves, twigs, dust or excess mud.
Either pick these up or use an artificial grass rake or a soft-headed brush to get rid of the debris to stop it becoming intertwined with the blades of grass so they don’t begin to decompose and encourage moss growth. If needed you can spray the grass with your nose to remove any debris and then let it dry naturally.
As a rule of thumb we recommend giving your artificial lawn a deep clean every month or so. However this does depend on the condition or dirtiness of your grass – it may require more frequent or less frequent maintenance depending on the season, weather, if you have pets and surrounding foliage.
For your monthly clean and artificial grass maintenance, first brush away any debris and then use an artificial grass cleaner to kill bacteria and prevent moss, mould or algae from growing on your grass – while leaving it smelling and looking great.
At BuzzGrass, our all-in-one artificial grass cleaner will disinfect your grass in minutes. Simply, follow the instructions on the bottle and you’ll be left with a lovely fresh cut grass scent.
When completing your monthly clean, we recommend doing a check of your grass to identify any tears, rips or holes in your grass. If you do notice any holes or tears in your grass it is important to get them repaired quickly so they don’t cause further damage.
We recommend regularly checking to ensure your artificial grass is draining properly, this can ensure you don’t get blockages or any drainage problems which can damage the grass.
The best way to clean your grass after a spillage is to use a damp sponge or damp cloth to blot away the spillage or stain.
If the spillage requires a little more cleaning, either mix some water with a little bit of detergent and again blot the spillage or stain. Alternatively you can use some artificial grass cleaner to remove the spillage. Once the spillage has been cleaned use a hose to rinse away any excess product.
If you have pets, then we recommend cleaning your artificial lawn more frequently to avoid any build up of odours.
If you do have a dog, cat or other pet that uses the artificial grass make sure you have proper drainage to ensure pet urine doesn’t settle on the grass and is properly drained. If it hasn’t been drained properly simply hose it away. Again, using a cleaner specifically designed for artificial grass will keep it smelling and looking great – even with pets.
If you have a pet that sheds a lot of hair, ensure to rake or brush away the hair regularly. Their hair can easily block the drainage system if it builds up so regularly check for blockages and ensure hair is regularly brushed and swept away.
If snow and ice collect on your artificial grass lawn, we recommend just leaving it to melt away. The grass has been specially designed to withstand all types of cold weather conditions. However, if you do need to remove the snow and ice then use a plastic snow shovel as this will help protect the grass.
If you’ve got chewing gum stuck in your artificial lawn the best way to remove it, is to:
After investing in artificial turf, you want the grass to be looking its best for as long as possible. There are a few things to completely avoid if you are looking to keep your artificial grass looking its best.
We recommend not using a pressure washer on your artificial grass lawn, as similarly to a hoover, the pressure of the washer can remove the sand infill.
Artificial turf can get mouldy if not regularly deep cleaned and maintained. As the blades of grass are held upright in a silicon sand base, moisture can get trapped. With the grass then providing shade, mould can grow.
Yes, if you don’t have any artificial turf cleaner, then warm water and soap are a great alternative to clean artificial grass. It is a great solution if you’re looking to quickly and easily clean up spills and messes. Mix some soap detergent with some warm water to the grass and then simply hose away after.
Yes, you can use a leaf blower instead of a brush to get rid of dirt and debris on your artificial grass.
