After 3 weeks of snow in March last year, we are expecting the winter months to bring unpredictable weather again in 2019. With this in mind, many people are diverting their attention towards a garden redesign for the upcoming season. As every garden is different, dependant on the size, shape and preferred a choice of decoration,  this task may seem daunting. As design experts, we will guide you through the logical steps to go through when considering a new home garden design to suit you.

How to redesign your garden

Initially, it is essential to focus on what has worked well previously and what has not worked so well in your garden. This helps to identify specific plants that are not coping well within certain garden compartments, and how to improve the design from a space-saving point of view.

Start by measuring your garden. By completing this step, you will have a good idea of the true size of your garden, particularly useful when purchasing decorative ornaments or plants. This can easily be completed with a tape measure and a helping hand.

How long will the work take?

When designing your garden, it can be easy to get carried away with a complex design. Before beginning any construction work, ensure you have allocated a reasonable time frame, complementing the time of the year. Many people will plan to redesign their garden over a couple of weeks when the weather starts to get warmer, others choose to complete this work gradually over the spring/summer months.

Small garden design ideas

When dealing with a smaller garden, it is important to be strategic in your design. With a smaller garden, the first step would be to step back and see how you can simplify the design and keep your garden looking tidy. From there you can consider the following ideas for small gardens to make the most from your space:

  • Making the utmost of attractive negative space – the area that is left from creating positive spaces in your gardens, such as flower beds and ponds
  • Build a corner seating area into your garden –  look for an area that will give you a comfortable view of the garden during the day and night
  • Keep to neutral cooler coloured flowers – stay away from colours that are vibrant and bold and incorporate neutral, soft colours such as; blue, violet and white. This will help to make your garden feel calmer and more open

Urban garden design ideas

For many city dwellers, garden spacing can be considered a large issue by feeling constricted to a balcony or a roof garden. An urban garden can help to spruce up your living environment and unwind from a hectic city lifestyle. The following tips can help transform your empty balcony into a blooming urban jungle:

  • Your balcony is considered to be an extension from inside your home. Colour coordinate your interior colour scheme for seamless integration, building on the basic green colour
  • Initially, select plants and flowers that require little maintenance and learn from any mistakes made in the past
  • To make the most out of your space, consider a climbing plant wall to create a refreshing balcony feature and leaving room for furniture
  • Brighten up your wooded or concrete private space by adding a luxurious sense of artificial grass

Wild-life friendly

No matter where you are located, your garden can be a sanctuary for all kinds of wildlife. If your garden is on the larger side, a pond provides a great supply of fresh water to a range of animals and insects. When constructing a pond, shallow ponds are preferred and should be filled with natural rainwater – water butts are advised to speed up this process.

This natural water is much purer and contains less harmful chemicals for aquatic creatures who are looking for a safe habitat. Other nature-friendly garden designs include:

  • Safely adding a bird box to your outside space and providing protein-rich feed to appropriate species
  • Addition of fruit trees within your garden act as a gold mine for pollinator insects such as bees, butterflies, moths and many more. Not only this, but they provide tasty fruit across the year
