Here we look at choosing artificial grass for a DIY artificial grass installation. Without doubt, DIY plays an important part in many people’s lives. We see that first hand here at our artificial grass factory. We get calls and emails every day from customers wanting to discuss the option of a DIY installation of our artificial grass. So for the benefit of all those interested in the idea, today we’re going to look at the first step. Before you commit to purchasing the product – making the right choice of artificial grass.

At first glance it might seem as if there is a vast choice of types of artificial grass. But, the truth is that there are only a few simple choices.

The most important consideration is the use to which the artificial grass will be put. The variety of applications will surprise you!
Choosing Artificial Grass

All our artificial grass is designed to look like a lawn. But products can vary in pile depth, colour etc so you need to consider carefully the use you have in mind.

Here are some of the key points to consider when choosing artificial grass:

1. Where is the artificial grass to go?
It could be the back lawn, a pathway, patio or decking or perhaps even a roof terrace. There are lots of ‘non lawn’ uses for artificial grass – even campervans!
2. Specific activity issues
It is important to identify what kind of usage the grass will have to withstand. It might be a lawn that gets virtually no footfall or conversely a pathway that is in daily use. It might be a play area for your children and/or pets
3. Health and safety issues
If you are planning to use the artificial grass in an outdoor play area for children, then you need to consider extra padding and shock absorption. We can supply a special foam pad for laying underneath the artificial grass carpet. Read more about our artificia grass underlay.
4. Climate issues
In Britain this is not really an issue but in other countries such as on the Mediterranean coast, for example, extreme exposure to ultra violet light can be an additional factor to consider. So you need to ensure that the grass carpet you buy is UV stabilised.
5. Sand Infill
The majority of grass carpet products require sand infill to help keep it level and maintain the structure of the pile. If for some reason you don’t want to take the sand infill route, then you will need to consider a heavier grass carpet with a deeper pile, usually the top end of the range in terms of cost.
