How To Lay Artificial Grass On Concrete

April 29, 2020

We have seen artificial grass laid on top of a variety of surfaces. Today we would like to talk a little about laying artificial grass on concrete.

Here are a few tips which could help you substantially.

Can You Lay Artificial Grass on Concrete?

Yes, you can lay artificial grass on concrete. This is ideal for those with small garden spaces, such as patios or balconies.

Considerations Before Laying Artificial Grass on Concrete

1. Surface levels

Check how level the concrete is. Ideally, it will slope gently so that rainwater will run off in one direction. If it is completely flat, or indeed sags slightly towards the middle, then we would advise drilling drainage holes.

2. Fill the cracks

Concrete will often be rough and may have small cracks. There are industrial sealants which will provide a smooth surface, or alternatively, you can lay a shock absorbing underlay. This will soften the grass underfoot and make sure that you don’t notice these imperfections.

How To Lay Artificial Grass on Concrete

Step 1: Lay down a weed killer

It is important to pull up and kill any weeds, to ensure that your artificial grass can bond with the concrete. Once the weedkiller has done its magic, use a stiff brush to clean the concrete area. To speed up the process, you could also use a jet wash if you have one. To prevent weeds coming through your artificial grass, you can also lay down a weed killing membrane.

Step 2: Install your underlay

The next step is to install your underlay. This will make your artificial grass as comfortable as possible, despite the concrete underneath. We stock a range of underlay materials to suit your project. On dry concrete, you will glue your underlay to the concrete and bond them together. Our 5.5kg multi-purpose turf adhesive is ideal for large areas.

Step 3: Lay your artificial grass

Once your underlay has been installed, you can then lay your artificial grass on top. We have put together a comprehensive guide on how to install artificial grass. If you have any questions, you can contact our team for help, or search for an installer in your area.

It is surprising how much of a difference artificial grass can make to a concrete surface – for example, a balcony. Typically, a balcony with a concrete floor can seem uninviting, but lay some artificial grass and your space will be transformed!
